Great article. Ethical Design is a topic I have been working on a lot lately. Just one little piece of hope. California has, since 2018 one of the most advanced privacy policies in USA called CCPA (https://oag.ca.gov/privacy/ccpa). It has also included more regulations in March 2021 that include dark Patterns. (https://oag.ca.gov/news/press-releases/attorney-general-becerra-announces-approval-additional-regulations-empower-data). Now, of course, the problem is implementation and inforcement, but it is a hopeful start. By the way, the GDPR seems slightly better now. I just got back from Europe, and most of the sites I visited, had the option to change privacy settings, and many have the do not collect data set by default. Only very few have a simple button saying: Reject all cookies. I try to be optimistic about the future.
